Sanders Theatre is located inside Memorial Hall at Harvard University. Completed in 1878 and a member of the League of Historic American Theatres, the 1,000-seat red oak theatre offers an intimate 180-degree design which provides unusual proximity to the stage. The theatre was designed to function as a major lecture hall and as the site of college commencements; and the theatre continues to play a major role in the academic mission of Harvard College, hosting undergraduate courses, as well as serving as a home to several undergraduate choir and orchestral groups, and as a venue for many professional performances year round.
Accessible Seating: Sanders Theatre is accessible from the floor level with ramp entrances at both ends of the transept (lobby). Accessible seating is on Orchestra level only, sold at all price levels based upon availability. There is an elevator that leads to restrooms on the lower level; however, not to the Mezzanine or Balcony. Note: the Theatre does not provide wheelchairs.
Accessible Restrooms: Restrooms are located on the lower level of Sanders Theatre in Memorial Hall. There are stairs and an elevator leading downstairs. The restrooms are accessible.
ADA Parking: There is no parking at Sanders Theatre itself. Patrons may be dropped off in the circle driveway on the Kirkland Street side of Sanders Theatre near the accessible entrance. We encourage patrons to park at either the Broadway Garage or the 52 Oxford Street Garage. The Broadway Garage is accessible with spaces on the first floor; there are curb cuts at all crosswalks between the garage and the Theatre. The 52 Oxford Street Garage is fully accessible with elevators and accessible parking spaces; there are curb cuts at all crosswalks between the garage and the Theatre. If necessary, a limited number of Accessible Parking Spaces may be available in a nearby location by advance arrangement only, though it is extremely difficult to honor requests received less than 2 business days prior to an event. Please plan ahead and contact the office as early as possible. To arrange for an Accessible Parking Space in a nearby parking lot, contact University Disability Resources via email at firstname.lastname@example.org, via phone at 617-495-1859 or via TTY at 617-496-0466.
Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs): Sanders Theatre is equipped with assistive listening devices for hearing enhancement. Please check with the box office manager or production manager to borrow a device. Our Sennheiser Infrared Assistive Listening System devices include both Sennheiser RI 100-J stethophone receivers and EZT 100 Induction Neckloops for use with hearing aids.
Service Animals: Sanders Theatre allows Service Animals in the theatre to accompany an event attendee. Service Animals must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered, unless these devices interfere with the Service Animal’s work or the individual’s disability prevents using these devices. In that case, the individual must maintain control of the animal through voice, signal, or other effective means. Read more about Service Animals from the Harvard University Disability Resources.
